Our Mission

At Willsam Books: A Charity For Kids By Kids, our mission is to ignite a lifelong passion for reading. We will foster a love of literature by providing free books to children ages 0-18 living in under-resourced communities. Our charity partners with dedicated teachers and schools to inspire and motivate young readers to read and discuss literature in vibrant learning environments where stories come alive. By nurturing a community of enthusiastic readers, we aim to empower children with
the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and increased confidence that will enrich their lives.

Purpose and Impact

Willsam Books is a children-led nonprofit dedicated to putting high-quality books into the hands of students in underserved schools and communities. Founded by two young readers and their mother who believe every child deserves a chance to fall in love with reading, Willsam Books partners with schools and teachers to donate books that inspire curiosity, imagination, and confidence. We believe books are more than just pages and words – they are doors to new worlds, new ideas, and new possibilities. Our mission is simple: get great books to kids who need them the most.

At Willsam Books, our purpose is to close the book gap – the lack of access to books that many children face in under-resourced communities. For many children, books are scarce at home and at school. We exist to change that. We want every child in Massachusetts to have the same opportunity to explore stories, discover heroes, learn new concepts, and see themselves reflected in the pages of a book.

When children read:

They build vocabulary and language skills;
Strengthen focus, memory and critical thinking skills;
Learn to express themselves;
Develop empathy by stepping into other people’s lives;
Gain confidence as they master new ideas;
Children who grow up surrounded by books are more likely to become strong readers, succeed in school, and believe in their own potential.

We believe reading is one of the most powerful tools a child can have, and Willsam Books aims to increase access to books.

Success Stories

“Today, our 5th grade students received brand-new books from the Willsam Books charity as part of its inaugural event. Willsam Books: A Charity For Kids by Kids was organized in collaboration with 5th grade teacher Mrs. Sacco, who helped bring this wonderful opportunity to our school. The charity’s president, Ann, along with her two sons, Will and Sam, and other board members, visited Angelo to personally present the books to students and staff. Smiles filled the cafe as students proudly received their new books. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Willsam Books charity for their generosity make making this special day so memorable”

I just want to say a huge thank you to the Willsam Books crew for today’s book giveaway. It truly meant so much. When I came back to my classroom, my kids were absolutely lit up with excitement. I already have so many sweet thank-you stories. Michael had just finished Percy Jackson this weekend and was beyond excited to start Awkward. He said, “I can already tell this is going to be a great book—it’s about a student trying to survive middle school.” At the end of the day, fifth graders kept popping their heads into my room just to say thank you again. The students who received Out of My Mind are also so excited to read it and were already talking about it: “All we know is the main character’s name is Melody, and she has a disability.” So many teachers came to me at dismissal to say how thankful they were and how amazing it was to see their students so excited about reading. The energy in the building was incredibly positive—happy, grateful, and full of joy. You could really feel the impact you made. Thank you for your generosity, your heart, and for making today so special for our kids.
